Smith & Tollefson started in 1954 with the partnership of two highly-decorated World War II veterans, John M. Smith and Charles E. Cashman. Cashman & Smith started out as a general practice firm, handling all aspects of the legal affairs of individuals and small businesses. John Smith also served as Steele County Attorney.

In 1960, Charles E. Cashman became a judge, and Mr. Smith continued in general practice. Then, as now, the firm emphasized litigation, especially personal injury work and criminal matters.

Richard E. Tollefson joined the firm in 1977. In 198l, John Smith died unexpectedly. That same year, Mr. Smith's son, Stephen J. Smith, who had been practicing with Rider, Bennett, Egan & Arundel in Minneapolis, joined Mr. Tollefson in the partnership. In 1994 Mark Rahrick joined the firm. Barbara Zeman is a paralegal who first started with the firm in 1985. Benjamin Cass, a recent graduate of Hamline University College of Law, is the law clerk, and will become an attorney upon passage of the Bar Examination. Assisting the legal professionals is a competent and experienced staff, with an average of twenty years experience.

Smith & Tollefson continues the fifty-year tradition of trial practice, and also handles all aspects of legal matters for individuals, business concerns, and units of government. Some of the legal matters handled by the firm are found in the Areas of Practice section of this site.
